Join the Lake County Art League!
Active since 1934, the Lake County Art League continues the tradition of being a gathering place for those interested in fine art. Professional and amateur artists find new experiences in the League. While centering on visual artists in Lake County, Illinois, membership is open to everyone regardless of residence.
MEETINGS
Meetings are usually held the third Monday of the month (January, February, March, April, June, September, and October) at the State
Bank of the Lakes, 50 Commerce Dr, Grayslake, IL, from 7:00 – 9:00 PM. In May and November, meetings are held at the Jack Benny Center for the Arts, located in Bowen Park, on Sheridan Road just North of Greenwood Ave. in Waukegan, IL.
Come early to the meetings to mingle and chat with fellow artists. There will be a short business meeting and a demonstration and/or talk given by the Guest Artist-of-the-Month. There is no charge for visitors, and you are always welcome to visit. Light refreshments are served.
BRING ART INTO THE COMMUNITY
To bring art into the community members may exhibit their work On-The-Wall at the Jack Benny Center for the Arts, the Undercroft Gallery, at various libraries, and other locations throughout Lake County. The League also supports community art projects and awards annual scholarships to CLC Art students.
MEMBER SHOWS/CRITIQUES
A Spring and Fall Members Show is held at the Jack Benny Center for the Arts in Waukegan. The shows provide an opportunity for members to display and sell their work. Additionally, at the conclusion of each show all pieces hung are critiqued by a guest artist and ribbons are awarded.
MONTHLY COMPETITION
At each monthly Grayslake meeting, members are encouraged to show a recent piece of their art and compete for recognition and newsletter publicity.
FINE ARTS FESTIVAL
Each year the Art League co-sponsors a festival. This event attracts many people and provides an excellent opportunity for members to show and sell their work.
WORKSHOPS and LIBRARY
Occasionally workshops are conducted by talented artists. Notables such as Bridget Austin and Tom Trausch have hosted past workshops. Education is a priority for the LCAL, not only through our workshops, but also our monthly meetings, and extensive Art Library. Over 500 cataloged books, tapes, and DVDs are available to League members.
NEWSLETTER and LCAL E-News
Our newsletter, Sketches, is published, posted on our web site and e-mailed monthly to LCAL members. Meeting and activity dates and times are published in the newsletter and/or sent to members via e-mail.
PLEIN AIR GROUP
At 9:00 AM to noon every few Saturday mornings, weather permitting, a group of outdoor painters and photographers meet at interesting locations around Lake County. No instruction is provided.
UNDERCROFT GALLERY
A modest Waukegan gallery puts together imaginative shows and insightful publicity that the exhibiting artist can continue to use. Shows run two months with two receptions.
HISTORICAL RECORD
An appointed historian keeps Lake County Art League record books, which date back to 1934. Newspaper articles and photographs of LCAL members and events are maintained and can be viewed by request.
